Banke Bihari Mandir, Vrindavan

The twin city of Mathura and Vrindavan resound with the stories of Lord Krisna till date; located 15 kms from Mathura,the city has more than 5000 temples dedicated to him. The place got its name from sacred tulsi also known as Vrinda. It is said that the place was a vine of tulsi groves hence the name Vrindavan. God spent quite a few years in Vrindavan also known as Braj bhoomi. The city has both centuries old as well as modern temples.

Though there are quite a few popular temples like Radha Raman temple, Rangaji temple, Radha Vallabh temple, ISKCON temple but the most revered among them is the Banke Bihari temple.

The temple was built by Swami Haridas in the year 1864. According to folklore, Swami Haridas discovered Banke Bihari in Nidhivan and it was later moved to the present temple premise. The temple is a special attraction during the month of Sravana when it adorns a special look. The entire premise is covered with flowers and other decorative. Special pooja is performed during Janmashtami, the idol of Shri Krishna is adorned with pitamber(yellow cloth) and jewellery. It is quite popular with Hindus.



Jagannath Puri

Jagannath Puri is approximately 60km from Orissa's state capital, Bhubaneswar. It is considered by many Hindus to be one of the four holiest places (dhamas) and is particularly revered by Vaisnavas as the home of Krisna in his form of Jagannath, Lord of the Universe, as well as being the site of many of the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Puri is also known as 'Sri Purusottama Dhama' or 'Martya Vaikuntha', the abode of Lord Visnu on earth. Other names are Sriksetra (best of all sacred centres), Purusottama Ksetra (the abode of the supreme being), Nilachal, Nalagiri, Sankha Ksetra, and Jagannath Dhama.

The Temple of Lord Jagannath is one of the major temples in India. The worship of Lord Jagannath is so ancient that there is no accurate record of how long it has been going on. It is strictly forbidden for non-Hindus to enter the Jagannath temple.

Govardhan

Govardhan is situated 26 km west of Mathura on the state highway to Deeg. A famous place of Hindu pilgrimage, Govardhan is located on a narrow sandstone hill known as Giriraj which is about 8 km in length. The young Lord Krisna is said to have held Giriraj up on the tip of small finger for 7 days and nights to shield the people of Braj from the deluge of rain sent down by Lord Indra.Govardhan is set along the edge of a large masonry tank known as the Mansi Ganga, which is believed to have been brought into existence by the operation of the divine will.
